Sridevi Kapoor, Bollywood Star, Dies at 54

Sridevi went on hiatus from acting following the 1997 release of “Judaai,” but returned to the industry with the 2012 offering “English Vinglish.”

As news of Sridevi’s death spread on Saturday, fans rushed to social media to express their condolences, including “Quantico” star Priyanka Chopra, who tweeted, “I have no words. Condolences to everyone who loved #Sridevi . A dark day . RIP.”

According to the BBC, the actress died in Dubai, where she was to attend a family wedding.

Sridevi made her first Bollywood film in 1978, eventually starring in more than 150 films including “Mr. India” and “Sadma.”

Her brother-in-law, Sanjay Kapoor, had previously told an Indian newspaper that she died of a cardiac arrest.

“The death of Indian actress Sridevi occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment’s bathtub following loss of consciousness,” the Dubai police tweeted, citing a postmortem..

They added that the case had been handed to the public prosecutor’s office, “which will carry out regular legal procedures”.

Two Dubai police officials speaking on condition of anonymity added that she was under the influence of alcohol.

Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayappan in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Sridevi’s fame peaked in the 1980s and 90s and she was seen as the first female superstar in India’s male-dominated film industry. She appeared in about 300 films and was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for her service to the film industry.

In Mumbai on Monday, hundreds of fans gathered outside Sridevi’s house before her cremation.

“We want to see her one last time,” 48-year-old Laxmi Subbaramaiah said. “All of my family members are big fans and we cried when we heard the news. We will wait here until her body comes back.”

Vishal More, 23, said he had travelled seven hours from Jalgaon district, about 400km from Mumbai, to bid Sridevi farewell. “I’ve been waiting all morning to catch a last glimpse of Sridevi,” he said. “I have watched all of her movies. She is such an inspiration.”

Sridevi, who went by a single name professionally, was one of the only Bollywood actresses to headline box-office hits without a man beside her in a leading role.

“Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi,” Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, wrote on Twitter. “She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances.”

Sridevi was 4 when she appeared in her first film, the start of a career of that would span more than four decades. She worked on Tamil-, Telugu-, Malayalam- and Kannada-language films in South India before moving to the Hindi stage.

Among her best-known works were “Mr. India” (1987), “ChaalBaaz” (1989), “Chandni” (1989) and “Lamhe” (1991). After marrying the film producer Boney Kapoor in 1996, she retired from acting for 15 years but returned with “English Vinglish” (2012).

Her final film, “Mom” — in which she played a teacher seeking to avenge the rape of her stepdaughter — was released last year. In its review of the movie, The Times of India wrote that Sridevi “demonstrates why she is the high-priestess” of Indian cinema.
