Charles Barkley Predicts Celtics Will Prevail Over Knicks in Long-Awaited Playoff Clash

For the first time since 1984, the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks will square off in a postseason series beyond the opening round—an overdue showdown between two of the NBA's most storied franchises. Game 1 tips off Monday, reigniting a rivalry that’s simmered beneath the surface for decades.

This latest iteration of the Knicks was built with one clear target: beat the Celtics. After falling short last season, New York’s front office went all-in, acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges in a bold attempt to dethrone the reigning champs. But the Knicks have struggled to fully realize the potential of their revamped roster, falling short of expectations despite the added star power.

Jalen Brunson, New York’s steady floor general, knows the odds are stacked against his team. And he’s fine with that.

“I’ve been an underdog my whole career,” Brunson said. “It is what it is. It’s all about what you make of the opportunity you’re given.”

The Celtics, meanwhile, are not just favorites in this series—they’re considered by many to be the league’s team to beat. An NBA.com poll of league experts saw six of seven pick Boston to move on. Among them? NBA legend and TNT analyst Charles Barkley.

Barkley has been high on Boston’s trajectory for a while. Speaking before the season on TNT’s Inside the NBA, he suggested the Celtics may be on the verge of a dynasty.

“They’re gonna be favored probably the next five to seven years,” Barkley said. “They are going to be favored to win the championship. You got Jayson [Tatum] and Jaylen [Brown], they’re two of the 10 best players in the world. They’re young. Derrick White’s young, [Kristaps] Porzingis is young. They’re gonna be the favorites.”

As Boston prepares to begin its title defense and the Knicks hope to finally live up to their potential, all eyes turn to this classic East Coast clash, where history, pride, and a trip to the conference finals are all on the line.
