Rodney Hinton Jr., the father of an 18-year-old fatally shot by police, has been denied bond in the killing of a Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy, in what authorities are calling a deliberate act of retaliation. The incident has intensified an already emotional and complex case involving police accountability, mental health, and violence.

At a Tuesday court hearing, Judge Tyrone Yates ordered Hinton Jr. to remain in custody without bond as he awaits trial for the May 2 death of Deputy Larry Henderson. Hinton Jr. is facing a charge of aggravated murder after allegedly driving his vehicle directly into the deputy, killing him.

“There will be an order of remand with no bond. Please assure the safety of the defendant and any mental health treatment that can be granted,” Judge Yates stated in court.

The case comes just days after Hinton Jr.’s son, Ryan Hinton, was shot and killed by Cincinnati police. Authorities say the younger Hinton was armed and fleeing from officers after being found in a stolen vehicle. While police claim Ryan pointed a gun at an officer, body camera footage has yet to clearly verify that detail.

According to investigators, Hinton Jr. met with police on the day of his son’s death and was shown the body cam footage. He reportedly left the police station visibly distraught, and shortly afterward, authorities allege, he drove into Deputy Henderson with deliberate intent. Officer Carl Beebe testified that witness accounts and video evidence indicate Hinton Jr. accelerated into oncoming traffic and did not attempt to brake before striking the deputy.

“There were no skid marks, no signs of braking,” Beebe said. “It was an intentional act, based on everything we’ve reviewed.”

In court, Hinton Jr.’s attorney, Clyde Bennett II, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and requested bond, arguing that his client’s mental state must be considered. Bennett insisted Hinton Jr. is not a calculated “cop killer,” but rather a man in emotional and psychological crisis.

“I don’t think he was a cop killer. I think he’s not in his right mind,” Bennett told the court. “And I think he should be treated like any other mentally ill person who commits a crime under the authority of a mental defect.”

The hearing was briefly disrupted by a man in the courtroom gallery shouting, “I just want my brother to see me,” prompting law enforcement to clear the room temporarily. Hinton Jr. was removed for safety, then returned to continue the hearing. The individual was not identified as Hinton Jr.’s family member.

Prosecutors emphasized the potential danger Hinton Jr. poses to law enforcement and the public, citing the deliberate nature of the incident and his apparent emotional instability.

“He is a giant mental health question mark,” said prosecutor Ryan Nelson. “He poses a clear and present danger.”

Despite Hinton Jr.’s lack of prior felony convictions and strong community ties, the judge ruled that no release conditions could adequately ensure public safety.

Hinton Jr.’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 12.

Meanwhile, the family of Ryan Hinton continues to demand answers about his death. Family attorney Michael Wright has filed a public records request for all body camera footage and reports related to the incident, promising a thorough review of what led to the fatal police shooting.

“We’re going to analyze frame by frame in each one of these videos,” Wright said at a news conference Monday. “We want to know why the officer made the decision to use deadly force.”

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Hinton family finds itself at the center of two devastating tragedies—one sparked by a police shooting, the other by its aftermath.
